Brabant 1571(h) 1/10 ecu
This specimen was lot 1503 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €110 (about US$157 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe II (1555-1598), AR dixième d'écu Philippe, 1571, Anvers. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Croix de Bourgogne couronnée. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1555-98, silver tenth écu Philippe of 1571, Antwerp mint. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned firesteel on a Burgundian cross, jewel of the Golden Fleece below. Nice patina, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
This type represents a very early experiment with decimal coinage, over a century before Russia adopted her hundred kopeks = one ruble. Twentieth, tenth and fifth écus were minted in Artois, Brabant, Flanders and Tournai. The écu Philippe of 1571-85 was a revival of the écu Philippe of 1555-66.
