CNG Lissner sale, lot 275

This specimen was lot 275 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $217.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE, Royal. Louis XV le Bien-Aimé (the Well-Beloved). 1715–1774. CU Demi-sol à la vieille tête. Paris mint; différents: heron/cross fleury. Charles-Norbert Röettiers, engraver. Jean Dupeyron I, director. Dated 1772 A. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 62 BN. Dark reddish brown choice UNC. Only specimen of this date ever graded. Scarcer date. Purchased from Superior Stamp & Coin." The specimen shown is a demi-sol à la vieille tête minted at Paris 1769-74 at the end of the reign of Louis XV. Ten other mints struck this type. Its face value was six deniers, half a sol or 1/240 of a silver écu. The type is common in low grade (the SCWC values it at $4 in VG) but well made specimens such as the one shown are scarce.

Recorded mintage: "few"[1], a scarce date.
