France 1769-A 1/2 sol

Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74673

This specimen was lot 74673 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $192. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Sol, 1769-A. Paris Mint. Louis XV. PCGS MS-63 Brown. This nicely preserved example boasts a bold strike with attractive brown patina."" The specimen shown is a demi-sol à la vieille tête minted at Paris 1769-72 at the end of the reign of Louis XV. Eleven other mints struck this type. Its face value was six deniers, half a sol or 1/240 of a silver écu. The type is common in low grade (the SCWC values it at $4 in VG) but well made specimens are scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a scarce date.

Specification: copper, 6.12 g, 24-25 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Charles Norbert Roettiers.
