SB1024-74673r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74673 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Sol, 1769-A. Paris Mint. Louis XV. PCGS MS-63 Brown. This nicely preserved example boasts a bold strike with attractive brown patina."" The specimen shown is a demi-sol à la vieille tête minted at Paris 1769-72 at the end of the reign of Louis XV. Eleven other mints struck this type. Its face value was six deniers, half a sol or 1/240 of a silver écu. The type is common in low grade (the SCWC values it at $4 in VG) but well made specimens are scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a scarce date.

Specification: copper, 6.12 g, 24-25 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Charles Norbert Roettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 865, KM-544.1; Gad-275; Dupl-1700.
