The first specimen was lot 1635 in Jean Elsen list 267 (Brussels, January-March 2014), where it was offered for €50 (about US$69). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR vingtième d'écu au bandeau, 1769 AA, Metz. Droit: Tête à gauche, ceinte d'un bandeau. Revers: Ecu de France couronné, entre deux rameaux d'olivier. Beau à Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, silver twentieth écu of the ribbon, 1769-AA, Metz mint. Obverse: head to left, hair tied in a ribbon; reverse: crowned arms of France between two olive branches. Fine to Very fine.)"

This diminutive coin, called a vingtième d'écu au bandeau, was the French equivalent of a half dime. In the coinage system of the ancien régime, the vingtième d'écu = 6 sols. The type was struck 1740-70 but is recorded for the Metz mint ("AA" mintmark) in 1740, 1744, 1748-49, 1760, 1765 and 1769 only.

Recorded mintage: unknown. Listed in Droulers[1] as rare even in low grade.

Specification: 1.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, 18-19 mm diameter, this specimen 1,38 g.
