Jean Elsen sale 140, lot 835

This specimen was lot 835 in Jean Elsen sale 140 (Brussels, March 2019), where it sold for €360 (about US$480 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, Koninkrijk, Willem III (1849-1890), AR 2 1/2 gulden, 1869. Krasjes. Mooie patina. bijna Fleur de Coin. (kingdom of the Netherlands, William III, 1849-90, silver 2½ gulden of 1869. a few nicks, nice toning, about Uncirculated.)"

The specimen shown is a late date of a type struck at the Utrecht mint for the Netherlands 1849-74. Most of the dates are common. After the final issue of 1874, no 2½ gulden were issued until 1898. The .945 fine alloy seems to be unique to the Netherlands.

Recorded mintage: 5,046,192, fairly common.
