Stack's Bowers 2025 ANA sale, lot 42453
SB825-42453r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42453 in the same sale, where it sold for $10,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. Japan - Russia. Hokkaido. Hakodate. 1.36 Momme, ND (ca. 1858). PCGS Genuine--Holed, EF Details. Individual Japanese numeral countermarks 一 三 六 (1-3-6) in a vertical line applied to the obverse of an 1858-CNB OB 25 Kopeks from Russia. VERY RARE and issued only briefly, with Russian and American host coins generally being observed. Though holed, this example otherwise lacks much in the way of handling, with some alluring iridescent toning scattered about." Hakodate is a city on the southern tip of the island of Hokkaido which long served as a Japanese outpost in an Ainu-dominated region. It was not until the Meiji era that the government made a systematic attempt to conquer the whole island, using many of the same tactics that the US government had used against the Amerindians in the nineteenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin 5.18 g, 0.868 fine silver.
