Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73376
SB1123-73376r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73376 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu (6 Livres), Year II (1793)-L. Bayonne Mint. PCGS AU-50. First semester (no dot under E). An early issue during the First French Republic and following the execution of Louis XVI, this "genius" Crown stands as the sole example of the mint for the type in the PCGS census. Quite RARE and only lightly circulated, with some subtle color and brilliance evident as well." When this coin was struck at Bayonne, the ancien régime had disappeared with the trial and execution of the king, who had appeared on the previous type (KM 615). In 1793, as invading armies approached from all directions, the Committee of Public Safety would initiate the Terror. In 1795, following the introduction of the metric system, the first five francs would be issued.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a somewhat better date.

Specification: 29.49 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dav-1336; KM-624; Gad-58.
