Heritage sale 61352, lot 22166

This specimen was lot 22166 in Heritage sale 61352 (Dallas, December 2023), where it sold for $119. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XVI 1/2 Ecu 1790-H XF Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC, La Rochelle mint. A particular coin that is scarce in any grade. ex. iNumis Sale 29 (June 2015, lot 706)." This mint struck this type 1775-84 and 1790. All of the mintages, where known, are small. In 1790, the French Revolution was underway but the revolutionaries were still trying to obtain the cooperation of the king in their reforms. When this failed, the king was tried and executed and the Terror launched.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a somewhat better date.

Specification: 14.74 g, 0.917 fine silver, 30.5 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Engraved by Benjamin Duvivier.
