Heritage sale 3064, lot 33176
Greece H3064-33176r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33176 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "Othon 5 Drachmai 1833-A AU50 NGC, Paris mint. A highly-coveted and ever-popular type here exemplified by deep-seated graphite and gun-metal-colored toning." This three-year type was struck in Paris 1833 and 1844-45 for king Otto I (1832-62). It comes with and without the "A" mintmark. Greece, poor, backward, corrupt and riven by feuds, could ill afford a substantial silver coinage and this is the only issue that is at all available. Proofs are reported to exist.

Recorded mintage: 378,000 (all varieties).

Specification: 22.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, .651 troy oz AGW, 37 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dav-115; KM-20.
