Passau 1701 thaler Dav-2517
This specimen was lot 750 in Jean Elsen sale 106 (Brussels, September 2010), where it sold for 650 euro. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, PASSAU, Evêché, Johann Philipp, cardinal de Lamberg (1689-1712), AR Taler, 1701, Augsbourg. Droit: B. à droite, en manteau épiscopal. Revers: Armoiries sous une croix et un chapeau de cardinal. Rare. Petits défauts de flan sur la tranche. Très Beau à Superbe." (Bishopric of Passau, Johann Philipp, cardinal of Lamberg, 1689-1712, silver thaler of 1701, Augsburg mint. Obverse: bust to right, in episcopal robe; reverse: arms crowned with cardinal's hat. Rare, small planchet defects on the rim, Very Fine to Extremely Fine.)
The Bishopric of Passau, between Bavaria and Austria, struck a few thalers in the eighteenth century, all now rare. The state fell to Bavaria during the Napoleonic upheavals and is now part of Germany.
