Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 30064
SB125-30064r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30064 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $18,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. Cob 8 Escudos, "6"-S (1746). Bogota Mint. Ferdinand VI. NGC VF-35. Variety with arches enclosing ribbons (quadrilobes) in semicircles. This charmingly crude example exhibits a strong central strike displaying most of the shield with partials of the legend. The reverse offers a bold full cross with nearly complete double quadrilobes, partials of the legend and clear last digit of the date. Close inspection reveals a slight disturbance in the obverse fields at 3 o'clock mentioned purely for accuracy, but is hardly a distraction. A wholesome and attractive example from this crude series with an excellent provence. Ex: The Joseph R. Lasser Collection (Ponterio 137- 1/2006) Lot #414. Ex: Spink (3/1997) Lot # 730." This type was issued from Bogotá 1746-56. Milled coinage of gold commenced in 1756. Eight escudos were also struck in 1746 for Philip V, who died that year. Specimens with legible dates are worth double those without. Many have been made into jewelry and sold as "pirate gold."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold.
