Poland SB120-21279r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21279 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $27,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Low Mintage Pope John Paul II Commemorative in Gold. POLAND. 200000 Zlotych, 1989-MW. Warsaw Mint. NGC PROOF-68 Ultra Cameo. A massive, impressive issue honoring native Pole, Pope John Paul II, this stunning gold proof offers intensely mirrored surfaces and a pleasing frosted nature to the devices, ultimately creating a spectacular cameo. RARE and majestic." Pope John Paul II, the first non-Italian pope in several centuries, was a Polish celebrity of the first order and even the Communist regime could not pass up the opportunity to issue NCLT's in his honor, especially if thereby they could earn foreign exchange.

Recorded mintage: 200.

Specification: 373.24 g, 0.999 fine gold, 12 oz, 70 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-141; KM Y190.
