Heritage sale 3041, lot 32290
Savoy H3041-32290r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32290 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $11,750. The catalog description[1] noted, "Sardinia. Vittorio Amedeo II gold Doppia 1678 MS63 NGC. A lustrous example of this rare type depicting the jugate half-length busts of Vittorio Amedeo II and his mother. While apparently struck from a somewhat worn obverse die, and with a few scattered die polishing lines, these pre-striking issues cannot be counted against this coin, which is truly Choice Mint State. A darker toning spot on the reverse shield is noted as a ready means of identification. Overall a lovely example of the type and one of the finest that one could hope to find. Ex. Grano Collection (NGSA II, lot 720)." This handsome coin is listed in the SCWC for 1675-80; all dates are rare. The duke's mother, Maria Giovanna Batista, was regent 1675-80. The duke of Savoy would not be promoted to king of Sardinia until 1720.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.66 g, .986 fine gold.
