Haider Ali's dominions in 1780

This specimen was lot 71046 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mysore. 1/4 Rupee, AM 1217, Year 7 (1788). Patan Mint. Tipu Sultan (1782-1799). NGC MS-63. Dated by the Mauludi Era (AM), 1217 in retrograde at 8 o'clock on the reverse. Single finest certified at NGC. All legends visible. Sharply struck and lustrous with dark toning throughout. A very nice example of the type." The Indian state of Mysore, under her rulers Haider Ali (1761-82) and Tipu Sultan (1782-99), was a serious thorn in the side of the British Raj. This type was struck AM 1216-AM 1224 and was accompanied by a 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 rupee.
