Saxe-Old Gotha 1598 thaler Dav-9760
This specimen was part of lot 1267 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €700 (about US$905 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN-COBURG-EISENACH, HERZOGTUM Johann Casimir und Johann Ernst, 1572-1633. Reichstaler 1598, 1599, Saalfeld. 2 Stück., Sehr schön +. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach, John Casimer and John Ernest, 1572-1633, thalers of 1598 and 1599, Saalfeld mint. Two pieces, very fine or better.)"
This type is listed for 1598-1612. The issues of 1601-12 are catalogued as Dav-7426 and are common. This division of the Saxon lands lasted 1572-1638. Saxe-Neu-Gotha dates from 1640.
