Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 1006

This specimen was lot 1006 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €700 (about US$873 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AV 40 francs, 1806 W, Lille. 4.336 p. frappées. Rare. Très Beau. (France, Napoleon I (1804-14), gold forty francs of 1806, Lille mint, 4,336 pieces struck. Rare, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1806 only and is known with only five dates. In 1806, the revolutionary calendar was dropped and Gregorian dates resumed.

Recorded mintage: 4,306[2], a scarce date.

Specification: 12.90 g, .900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz.
