Sincona sale 33, lot 2418
Sayn and Wittgenstein in 1789

This specimen was lot 2418 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$386 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Sayn-Wittgenstein, Grafschaft. Gustav von Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein, 1657-1701 24 Mariengroschen 1677. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, county of Sayn-Wittgenstein, Gustav von Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein, 1657-1701, 24 Mariengroschen of 1677. Very fine-extremely fine)"

The county of Sayn was a very small state between the archbishopric of Cologne and the duchy of Nassau. The 24 mariengroschen was equal to two-thirds thaler and the count issued this denomination 1673-91 in numerous types. This is one of the more common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 16.25 g.

Catalog reference: Müller-Jahncke/Volz 374. Dav-929, KM 42.
