Sincona sale 84, lot 565

This specimen was lot 565 in Sincona sale 84 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$404 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSIA Russian Empire and Federation, 15 Kopecks 1917, St. Petersburg Mint, VS. Rare. NGC MS66. Extraordinary condition. Cabinet piece."

This type was struck without mintmark 1915-17. The year 1917 is very scarce despite the substantial mintage. The previous sub-type (KM Y21a.2) bore the St. Petersburg mintmark. Russia surrendered to the Germans in 1917 amid the chaos of the October revolution and the silver coinage quickly ceased.

Recorded mintage: 14,320,000.

Specification: 2.70 g, 0.500 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM Y21a.3, Bitkin 144 (R).
