Portugal 1789 800 reis
Revision as of 12:13, 20 June 2025 by LatinKing2020 (talk | contribs) (Text replacement - "Zurich:" to "Zürich:")
The first specimen was lot 3031 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 350 (about US$461 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1/2 Escudo 1789. Lissabon. Gutes sehr schön-sehr schön. (kingdom of Portugal, half escudo of 1789, Lisbon mint, very fine or better.)"
This denomination is often catalogued as a half escudo but was actually an 800 réis. This type is listed for 1789, 1792 and 1796 and is likely much scarcer than the catalog indicates.
Recorded mintage: 6,749.
Specification: 1.79 g, 0.917 fine gold, .052 troy oz AGW, 16 mm diameter; the first specimen: 1.78 g.
Catalog reference: Gomes 22.01. Fr-119, KM 296.
