Luzern 1815 2-1/2 batzen KM-111
This specimen was lot 3427 in Sincona sale 64 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 475 CHF (about US$595 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | Lucerne | Stadt und Kanton. 2 1/2 Batzen 1815, Luzern. Mit Wertangabe und Jahreszahl auf der Rückseite. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. FDC. (city and canton of Luzern, 2½ batzen of 1815, Luzern mint. With value and date on the reverse. Rare in this condition, Uncirculated.)"
The coinage of the canton of Luzern (sometimes spelled Lucerne) is not so common and this scarce issue is no exception. It comes with the value in a circle, shown here, and with the value in a wreath (KM 110). Coinage ceased altogether in 1846 with an issue of five rappen. At this time, ten rappen = one batzen and ten batzen = one frank and four franken = one thaler.
