Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp 1659 thaler Dav-3702A
This specimen was lot 863 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 3,200 CHF (about US$3,938 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp, Herzogtum Friedrich III. 1616-1659. Taler 1659. Auf seinen Tod. Geharnischtes Brustbild mit Mantel nach rechts. Rv. Neun Zeilen Schrift. Gutes sehr schön. (Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp, Frederick III, 1616-59, thaler of 1659, issued on the death of the duke. Obverse: armored bust with cape to right; reverse: nine line inscription, good very fine.)"
Schleswig-Holstein has been contested between Germany and Denmark since the Middle Ages. In the seventeenth century, the area was fragmented between several ducal lines and the bishop of Lübeck. This thaler, issued on the death of the duke in 1659, comes in several varieties (Dav 3702, Dav-3702A and Dav-3702B), all rare.
