France 1552-A 2 henri d'or
This specimen was lot 1081 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 7,000 CHF (about US$8,497 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE | Kingdom. Henri II. 1547-1559. Double henri d'or 1552 A, Paris. Münzmeisterzeichen merlette (Bastien de Riberolles). Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. NGC AU Details. Leicht gereinigt. (kingdom of France, Henry II, 1547-59, double henri d'or of 1552, Paris mint. Very rare, Extremely fine. Slightly cleaned.)"
This type was struck at Paris for Henry II 1551-61. It had a face value of one hundred sols tournois or five livres tournois. It is the first type, with a bare head (not laureate) and lilies and crescents on the reverse.
Recorded mintage: 11,600, including the henri d'or, but two known[2].
Specification: 7.30 g, 0.958 fine gold. This specimen is 7.23 g.
