Sincona sale 46, lot 1

This specimen was lot 1 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$500 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Farouk, 1937-1952. 50 Piastres 1938 (AH1357). Hochzeit. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Egypt, Farouk, 1937-52, fifty piastres of 1938, wedding commemorative. Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

King Farouk, best known to numismatists for his onetime ownership of such American rarities as an 1804 dollar and a 1913 liberty head nickel, ruled 1936-52 before being ousted in a coup by a group of army officers which included Gamal Nasser. This wedding commemorative was part of a set which included twenty, fifty (shown here), hundred and five hundred piastres.

Reported Mintage: 10,000.

Specification: 4.25 g, 0.875 fine gold, .118 troy oz AGW, this specimen 4.29 g.
