Brandenburg-Ansbach 1537 thaler Dav-8965
This specimen was lot 1310 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 1,800 CHF (about US$2,160 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"GERMANY, Brandenburg-Franken, Markgrafschaft, Georg und Albrecht, 1527-1545. Taler 1537, Schwabach. Sehr schön. Schöne Portraits. (margraviate of Brandenburg-Franconia, George and Albrecht, 1527-45, thaler of 1537, Schwabach mint. Very fine, Nice portraits.)"
We have filed this under Brandenburg-Ansbach, as it was made there 1537-38, but this type is actually a joint issue of the Ansbach and Bayreuth lines. The Margravate of Brandenburg-Ansbach was ruled by the senior branch of the Hohenzollerns until the time of Napoleon, who confiscated it and awarded it to Bavaria.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 29.10 g.
