Mysore AM1217/7 2 rupees
This specimen was lot 485 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $9,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA, Independent States. Mysore. Tipu Sultan. AH 1197-1202/AD 1787-1799. AR Haidari – Double Rupee. Patan (Seringapatan) mint. Triply dated RY 7, cyclic year 43, and AM 1217 (AD 1788/9). In NGC encapsulation graded MS 67. Superb gem uncirculated specimen with beautiful multicolored satin patina. Finest known by far and only one ever graded of this subtype. Very rarely ever offered or seen especially in this grade. Truly an amazing specimen. So sharply struck you could shave with it. Purchased from M. Louis Teller, November 1982." The double rupee, with five dates listed, is much scarcer than the single rupee. The Indian state of Mysore, under her rulers Haider Ali (1761-82) and Tipu Sultan (1782-99), was a serious thorn in the side of the British Raj.
