Steve Album sale 51, lot 3182

This specimen was lot 3182 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAPAL STATES: Pius IV, 1559-1565, AR testone, Ancona Mint, a few light scratches on both sides, VF." For this pontificate, Berman notes three testone from Rome, two from Ancona, one from Macerata and one from Avignon in France. THis one is fairly common. Some are dated 1563.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.54 g, 0.917 fine silver, 29-30 mm diameter, plain edge, this specimen 9.33 g.
