Danish West Indies 1757 12 skilling

from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 76688

This specimen was lot 76688 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $85. The catalog description^[1] noted, "DANISH WEST INDIES. 12 Skilling, 1757. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik V. PCGS VF-35." Few of the European powers bothered to strike coinage for their colonies in the Caribbean; the economic theory of the day suggested that colonies should be a source of bullion, not a drain. This design was used 1748, 1757 (shown here) and 1763-65 along with a 6 skilling and 24 skilling.
