"Braunschweig-Grubenhagen, Herzogtum, Wolfgang Philipp II. 1567-1596 Taler 1584. Osterode. Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Grubenhagen, Wolfgang Philip II (1567-96), thaler of 1584, very fine.)"
Brunswick-Grubenhagen was a splinter of the Welf domains in north east Germany, first erected in 1291. It was partitioned and reunited several times. During its final incarnation, it was ruled by brothers Wolfgang and Philip II. On Philip's death, the title lapsed and the territory eventually passed to Brunswick-Calenberg. This type of 1577-84 is scarce.
