Heritage sale 3082, lot 33825

This specimen was lot 33825 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Bavaria. Ludwig II gold 10 Mark 1876-D MS65 NGC, Munich mint. The finest NGC-certified example by a full 20 grade points--an incredible feat for this usually unremarkable gold issue that is unheard of in gem grades." King Ludwig II ruled until 1886, when he was deposed in favor of his brother. Disliked for his extravagance and his homosexuality, he died soon after under very mysterious circumstances. This type, struck 1874-81, is common.
