Bolivia 1858-Paz P 1/2 sol
This specimen was lot 1167 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,149.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Republic. 1825-present. AR 1/2 Sol. La Paz mint. Dated 1858 PAZ P. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 66. Gem UNC with very light toning. One of only three ever graded and by far the finest. A two year only type and extremely rare especially in this condition. Purchased from Louis Collins, December 1972." The La Paz mint produced these debased one half sol coins 1858-59. These coins, along with contemporary issues from Potosi mint, flooded South America and were denounced by Bolivia's neighbors, to no avail. Though the Potosi mint would eventually reform the coinage and produce standard silver weights, La Paz mint would close.
