Jean Elsen sale 123, lot 822
France JE123-822r.jpg

This specimen was lot 822 in Jean Elsen sale 123 (Brussels, December 2014), where it sold for €830 (about US$1,206 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AV 20 francs, 1806 Q, Perpignan. 3973 p. frappées. Très Rare. presque Très Beau. (France, Napoleon I (1804-14) gold twenty francs of 1806, Perpignan mint, very rare, about very fine.)"

Gold coins of the French branch mints are very scarce as a class and probably underpriced. This type was struck 1806 only at five mints of which only Paris is common.

Recorded mintage: 3,913[2].

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered *DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE*.

Catalog reference: Gad-1023, F.513/3, KM 674.3.
