Denmark 1667 2 ducats Fr-112
This specimen was lot 1087 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €84,000 (about US$93,089 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Simply Marvelous Double Ducat Featuring a Sailing Ship Engraved by Jeremias Hercules, DENMARK. 2 Ducats, 1667. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik III. NGC MS-63★. Mintmaster: Frederik Caspar Herbach. Engraver: Jeremias Hercules. An out-of-this-world almost prooflike example with meticulous detail remaining within the stunning portrait of Frederik III's as well as the evocative ship design on the reverse.
This VERY RARE Double Ducat was made by the very talented German engraver, Jeremias Hercules, who designed some of the most beautiful coins and medals from the reign of Frederik III and Christian V."
Two different double ducats were struck 1667; this one, with a bareheaded bust, and KM 216.2, with the crowned bust of the king in a circle. The crowned bust variety was struck 1664-67. Confusingly, Friedberg catalogs both as Fr-112. Two ducats from Copenhagen (Fr-82 and Fr-104) and Gluckstadt (Fr-79) add to the variety.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.98 g, 0.979 fine gold, 29 mm diameter, this specimen 6.94 g.
