Deventer 1523 goldgulden Fr-22
The first specimen was lot 723 in Schulman sale 347 (Amsterdam, April 2015), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,574 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Adelaarsgoudgulden. 1523. Stadsadelaar, daaronder wapentje van het oversticht ✠ mone aVRe de daVentRia i5Z3. Kz. rijksappel in driepas ✠ KaRolVS Romano impeRato. R. Zeer fraai." The second specimen was lot 3166 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €400 (about US$539 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"NIEDERLANDE, DEVENTER, Stadt. Goldgulden (Florin d'or) 1523, mit Titel von Karl V. GOLD. Kl. Schrötlingsriß, sehr schön. (Netherlands, city of Deventer, gold gulden of 1523, struck in the name of Charles V. Minor crack, very fine.)"
This scarce and enigmatic gold gulden was issued by the city of Deventer in the early sixteenth century as Charles V was consolidating his control of the Netherlands. Deventer issued coins until the late seventeenth century.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
