Schulman sale 347, lot 722

This specimen was lot 722 in Schulman sale 347 (Amsterdam, April 2015), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,574 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, ""lebuinusgoudgulden. 1488. heilige lebuinus op gotische troon achter stadswapen ★ mot★ ‘ DE ★ daV – entRia 88 ★ – ★. Kz. ✥ FREDRIC ‘★ ROMANORV ‘★ impeR '. RRR. Zeer fraai. uit veiling Schulman 327 van 25 apr. 2007, no. 105. dit is de allereerste en oudste gedateerde gouden munt van de stad. deventer verwierf pas in 1486 het recht om gouden munten te mogen slaan." This rare and enigmatic gold gulden was issued by the city of Deventer in the late fifteenth century as the Netherlands were falling under Hapsburg control. Deventer issued coins until the late seventeenth century.
