Schulman sale 375, lot 1046

This specimen was lot 1046 in Schulman sale 375 (Amsterdam, April 2023), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,140 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"STEDELIJKE MUNTSLAG TE DEVENTER, Schelling. 1523. Stadsadelaar met klein wapentje onder de poten ✠ MONETA ⋆ NOVA ⋆ – ⋆ DE ⋆ DAVENTRIA. Kz. gecombineerd wapen op gebloemd kruis, jaartal in romeinse cijfers in het omschrift ANNO⋆ D – OMIN '⋆ – M⋆ CCCC – C⋆ XXIII. RRR. Voor het type uiterst net. Zeer fraai +. (city of Deventer, schilling of 1523. Obverse: municipal eagle with small arms under its legs; reverse: arms over floriate cross, date in Roman numerals. Very rare, very interesting, very fine or better.)"

This is not the better known Rijderschelling struck by Deventer 1683-91. That coin, worth six stuivers, was only 4.95 g. This arendschelling succeeded the Snaphaan of Gelderland, struck in 1509. It was also struck in Nijmegen, Kampen and Zwolle and circulated in west Germany. Eventually, the States General shut down all the municipal mints due to their inveterate habit of cheating on the weight and alloy.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 7.48 g.

Catalog reference: Delm-687; vdCh. 13.35; FD. 43.
