Gelderland 1620 cavalier d'or Fr-240
This specimen was lot 1864 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it sold for €4,300 (about US$5,568 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, GELDERLAND, Provincie, AV grote gouden rijder, 1620. Vz/ Ridder te paard r., met daaronder het Gelders wapen. Kz/ Gekroond Generaliteitswapen. Minieme krasjes op kz. Sterk uitgemunt met fraaie goudkleur. Prachtig. (Netherlands, province of Gelderland, golden rider of 1620. Obverse: mounted knight charges right, over the provincial arms; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality. Minor marks on the obverse, slightly irregular edge, Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck 1606-08, 1613-28. Other provinces struck cavaliers d'or as well but the type was abandoned in favor of the ducat after the mid-seventeenth century.
