Ponterio sale 177, lot 12217
France 1806A 40 francs rev P177-12217.jpg

This specimen was lot 12217 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $764. The catalog description[3] noted, "FRANCE. 40 Franc, 1806-A. NGC AU-55." The French empire produced large quantities of gold coins, made from metal looted from countries he conquered. However, nearly all of it was produced at Paris, leaving the branch mint issues quite scarce today. This is the first date reflecting the régime's return to the Gregorian calendar and is common.

Recorded mintage: 196,185[2].

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz.

Catalog reference: Fr-481; KM-675.1; Gad-1082, F.538/1.
