Künker sale 403, lot 1620

This specimen was lot 1620 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €320 (about US$420 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Pius VI. 1775-1799. 2 Carlini ANNO XXII/1796, Rom. Stempelschneider Tommaso Mercandetti. Die Blätter des Lorbeerkranzes auf der Rückseite zeigen nach rechts. Vorzüglich. (Papal States, Pius VI, 1775-99, double carlino of year 22, 1796. The leaves of the laurel wreath on the reverse point to the right. Extremely fine.)"

This type was issued 1777-96 for Pius VI (1774-99) from the Rome mint. It is the last issue of this denomination and does not fit the quasidecimal system adopted in 1740 (ten baiocchi = one giulio, ten giulio = one scudo). Two carlini = half testone = fifteen baiocchi.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.6 g, 0.917 fine silver (actual weight varies, 4.24-5.65 g), this specimen 4.05 g.

Catalog reference: Muntoni 83; Toffanin 2782/2, Ber-2977, KM 1215.
