Künker sale 336, lot 6057

This specimen was lot 6057 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,225 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XV, 1715-1774. Louis d'or à la vieille tête 1774, A, Paris. GOLD. R Vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, louis d'or of the old head of 1774, Paris mint. Scarce, extremely fine.)"

This scarce type was issued 1771-74 from six mints but the vast majority of survivors are from the Paris mint. Double louis and demi-louis also exist, the demi-louis being extremely rare. This date is common for the type but is still scarce. A few louis d'or au buste habillé of Louis XVI also exist.

Recorded mintage: 296,427[2], a common date of a scarce type.

Specification: 8.15 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, this specimen 8.11 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 802, Dr/2 № 546, Duplessy 1646; Fr-467; Gadoury 342.
