Sincona sale 35, lot 5472

This specimen was lot 5472 in Sincona sale 35 (Zurich, October 2016), where it sold for 26,000 CHF (about US$30,864 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Zurich | Stadt, Doppeldukat 1673. Nach links schreitender Zürcher Löwe mit Wappenschild und Schwert. Rv. Jahreszahl mit Inschrift auf Engelskartusche. Sehr selten und prachtvolle Erhaltung. Fast FDC. (city of Zürich, double ducat of 1673. Obverse: lion to left supporting city arms and sword; reverse: date, motto and angel's head in cartouche. Very rare and in beautiful condition, About uncirculated.)"

This double ducat, issued 1673 only, is among the most expensive gold coins of the canton. It was the first double ducat issued since 1641.
