Great Britain 1889 shilling KM-761
This specimen was lot 74840 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, 1889. London Mint. Victoria. NGC MS-64. Small bust type. Quite enchanting and enticing, this near-Gem minor glistens with an abundance of brilliance and features some subtle golden toning at the peripheries." The Jubilee bust of the queen was introduced in 1887 and received considerable criticism for the tiny crown atop the queen's head. In 1889, the bust was enlarged; both styles exist for the year. The small bust is very scarce, the large bust (KM 774) is common.
Recorded mintage: 7,040,000 (including KM 774).
Specification: 5.65 g, 0.925 fine silver, 23.5 mm diameter.
