This specimen was lot 23687 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Sovereign, 1889. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. Jubilee bust type, Normal "JEB" on truncation. A nice wholesome example of the type with a hint of tone giving it a pleasing appearance. From the Collection of Richard Jewell." This type was struck 1887-92 in considerable numbers. It is known as the "Jubilee bust" as the obverse was introduced on the fiftieth anniversary of Victoria's reign. This date is common.
