Great Britain 1889 shilling rev Marth.jpg

The first specimen was lot 1896 in Sincona sale 82 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 5,000 CHF (about US$6,692 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Victoria, 1837-1901. Proof Shilling 1889, London. Large Jubilee head. Sehr selten (Very rare). NGC PF66. Prachtexemplar (Cabinet piece). Tied with one other for finest certified by NGC." The "jubilee head" (KM 761) was introduced in 1887 and received considerable criticism for the tiny crown atop the queen's head. In 1889, the shilling was modified to enlarge the bust; this large bust is common while the small bust is rare. It was superseded by the old head bust in 1893.

Recorded mintage: 7,040,000 including KM 761.

Specification: 5.65 g, 0.925 fine silver, 23.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 774, Spink 3927. Bull 3143 (R3).
