The specimen shown is a type struck in Chile 1942-54. It superseded a copper-nickel type last struck in 1940. This type is the first to feature the hero of independence, Bernardo O'Higgins (1778-1842). It was replaced by an aluminum type in 1954. Varieties exist in the shape of the "5" in the date.
Recorded mintage: 17,200,000.
Specification: 7.5 g, copper, 25.2 mm diameter.
