Chile 1953 100 pesos rev H3030-23333.jpg

The specimen shown is an example of a type struck in Santiago, Chile, 1932, 1946-64, 1968-80. It was issued steadily 1932-80 with no pretense of it being a circulating coin, especially after the peso had been dropped in favor of the escudo in 1960. It was and is a bullion coin, along with a similar gold 20 pesos (KM 168) and 50 pesos (KM 169). The type is common but the recent bold rise in the price of gold has made this coin expensive. This specimen was lot 23333 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 100 Pesos 1953-So, MS66 NGC. A remarkable example of this otherwise common type, exactingly struck with very choice surfaces. The luster is full and frosty beneath light tone. Ex: Kensington Collection, includes auction tag."

Recorded mintage: 175,000.

Specification: 20.34 g, 0.900 fine gold, .589 troy oz AGW, 31 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 175, Fr-54.
