CNG Lissner collection, lot 572
from Heritage sale 3114, lot 33766
H3114-33766r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 572 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,573. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY, Regno d'Italia. Vittorio Emanuele II. 1861-1878. AR 2 Lire. Napoli (Naples) mint. Dated 1863 N BN. Shield reverse. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64. Light toning over satin silver surfaces. Choice uncirculated. Highest graded. Purchased from Empire Coins, December 1981." The second specimen was lot 33766 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $2,640. The lot description[2] noted, "Italy: Vittorio Emanuele II 2 Lire 1863 N-BN MS67 NGC, Naples mint. Shield reverse. A blazing single-year type whose condition seemingly should not exist, featuring appearances of just having been struck. Cobalt silhouettes abound this superior Gem and endure against satiny luster throughout both faces. The sole finest for the type and rare as such. Ex. ANPB Collection." This denomination is the scarcest of the silver coins issued in the 1860's, being minted 1862-63 only. This design, with the shield reverse, was issued for part of 1863 only from Naples and Turin, along with the value reverse (KM 16). The denomination was not issued again until 1881, during the reign of Umberto I, when it was produced in large numbers at Rome.

Recorded mintage: 10,090,000 (including KM 16.1).

Specification: 10 g, 0.835 fine silver, this specimen Ø26 mm, 15.33 g (?), 6h axis.

Catalog reference: KM 6a.1: Mont 196.
