France 2009 250 euro

Jean Elsen sale 120, lot 1358

This specimen was lot 1358 in Jean Elsen sale 120 (Brussels, March 2014), where it sold for €205 (about US$337 including buyer's fees. The catalog description^[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Cinquième République (1959- ), AV 250 euro, 2009, Semeuse. Fleur de Coin. (France, Fifth Republic, gold 250 euro of 2009. Uncirculated.)"

The treaty which established the euro in 1999 gave specifications for the one cent thru two euro coins which are legal tender throughout the European Union. Higher denominations are not legal tender and each country is free to issue commemoratives as it sees fit, a right the Paris mint has ruthlessly exploited. This quarter ounce gold coin is listed for 2009 only.

Specification: 8.45 g., .920 fine gold, 0.250 troy oz AGW, 22 mm diameter.
