Aureo sale 243, lot 570

This specimen was lot 570 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 140 € (about US$211 including buyer's fees). The catalog[1] noted,

"Carlos III (1759-1788). 1764. Sevilla. VC. 1/2 escudo. Escasa. MBC-/MBC. (Half escudo of 1764, Seville mint. Scarce, very fine.)"

This type was struck in Madrid 1759-71 (KM 389.1) and Seville 1759-71 (KM 389.2) and is not especially rare tho scarcer than later issues which were only .901 fine. Half escudos were struck in metropolitan Spain 1738-97 in considerable numbers and are quite a bit more common than their silver equals, the eight reales. This is opposite from Latin America, where silver pesos were minted in vast quantities but half escudos would not be minted until the reign of Ferdinand VII. Assayer VC is listed for 1764-67.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.917 fine gold, .050 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12150, Fr-279, KM 389.2, Cal. 787.
