Künker sale 385, lot 3673

This specimen was lot 3673 in Künker sale 385 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,585 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. Dukat 1742, Karlsburg, für Siebenbürgen. GOLD. R Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Erworben 1987 bei der Firma Rittig. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, ducat of 1742, Karlsburg mint, for Transylvania. Rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1741-43, early in Maria Theresia's reign. It is scarce. Unlike the Empire, where Maria Theresia had to rule thru her husband Franz (and later her son Joseph), she was queen of Hungary outright.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.50 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen3.48 g.
