Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1473

This specimen was lot 1473 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €400 (about US$530 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XVI (1774-1793), AV louis d'or à la tête nue, 1785D, Lyon. D/ T. nue à g., les cheveux longs. R/ Ecus accolés de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Rare. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-93, gold louis of the bare head of 1785, Lyon mint. Obverse: bare head left with long hair; reverse: accolated arms of France and Navarre under a crown. Rare, Very Fine.)"

A scarce louis d'or à la tête nue from the Lyon mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 4,081,749 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the French mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

Recorded mintage: 41,126[2], a scarce date.

Specification: 7.64 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier, this specimen is 7,63 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 881, Dr/2 № 605, KM 591.5, Fr-475, Dupl-1707; Gad-361.
